Svetlana is pleased to present Natural Behavior, an exhibition by Joanne Robertson. This is Robertson's first solo show in New York and her first time exhibiting at the gallery.
Robertson, who lives between Glasgow and London, has worked for nearly two decades to develop an approach to painting that is sometimes at odds with her peers. Her works are often large scale abstractions, forward in their wide brushwork and reaching grasp of color. They draw you in with a material appeal — more similar, perhaps, to the intrigue of an unfamiliar voice, than the gleam of a handsome but ultimately dumb artifact. Some have noted the energy evident in her paintings, but such an entry may mistake reaction for feeling.
Robertson has also worked extensively as a recording artist, producing several studio albums. She grew up in the seaside resort town of Blackpool, near Manchester. At the gallery, several paintings hang, most completed in 2018.
